Chapter 9

This is the eighth chapter of the game Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective.

Introduction[]

I went to try and rescue Prisoner D99. Even under ordinary circumstances, that prison has a strange atmosphere... But this time, there's something even stranger about it.

An execution... With my memory gone, I don't have a clear image of what that is in my head. But even I can sense the strong feeling of foreboding that hangs in the air. Maybe I'm too late...?

Plot[]

Sissel returns to the prison and finds the guard room dark. The guards say the power is off and the generator needs fixing. The power failure caused the lights to go out, internal phones to go down, and cells to unlock. Officer Bailey is dancing, he calls his dance the Panic Dance and says its been passed down for generations. The other guard gets a phone call from the death chamber saying internal phones are working, but the generator is still down. Bailey proclaims he’ll dance til’ he drops.

Sissel travels by phone to the death chamber, and uses the Ghost World to see in the dark. He travels to the generator room and finds an officer who dropped a wrench needed to fix the generator, but the wrench is too heavy to manipulate. Sissel opens the officer’s toolbox to signal where the wrench is. The officer repairs the generator. The lights turn on and the cells lock. From the room, Sissel can see the curry-loving prisoner has fallen asleep in a tunnel he was digging out of his cell.

Sissel returns to the death chamber to find an electric chair has exploded and killed Detective Jowd. Guards who are repairing the chair say it must have exploded because the country has not used the death penalty in years. To get to Jowd’s body, Sissel turns on the electric chair and creates a path by the frightened guard. When he reaches Jowd in the autopsy room, Jowd’s spirit is apathetic and views his memory loss as “a welcome thing”. When Sissel tells Jowd that Lynne wants to stop his execution, his memories return. Jowd claims he doesn't know Sissel.

Sissel rewinds 4 minutes before Jowd’s death but before they watch what happened, Jowd asks if he is doing the  right thing by saving him. Sissel says he doesn’t know, but Lynne believes it is right. In the 4 minutes, the rockstar prisoner sees guards and tries to flush an “X” marked paper down his toilet, but it gets clogged. Jowd finishes his last meal of chicken and flushes his napkin down the toilet because the trash is full. When the guards come to take him away, Jowd apologizes that they have to experience an execution. When the officers test the electric chair, it explodes and kills Jowd. Sissel does not remember what an electric chair is, and believes the explosion is how an execution is supposed to go.

Sissel restarts the 4 minutes and possesses the autopsy room’s internal phone when Bailey calls. Sissel stays in the room until another guard calls from the second floor cells to say that Jowd is about to be brought to the chamber. There, Sissel unsticks the paper caught in the rockstar prisoner’s toilet, the note carries him to the curry-loving prisoner’s cell. The note catches a hook in the cell toilet, setting off a bell. The prisoner returns from the tunnel upon seeing the “X” paper. He does not fall asleep in the tunnel, creating a fate change. Sissel rings the bell again so that the prisoner creates a path to Jowd’s cell with his digging spoon.

In Jowd’s cell, Sissel makes an “O” marked paper with a tomato sauce can and the napkin so when Jowd flushes it, the curry-loving prisoner will return to digging and take Sissel - possessing the spoon - closer to the death chamber. Sissel causes the electric chair to explode early, avoiding Jowd’s death and causing the power outage.

Before returning to the new present, Jowd instructs Sissel to go to the spoon. Sissel resolves to help Jowd escape the prison so he won’t be executed.

Debuts[]

Trivia[]

When Bailey calls the autopsy room, if Sissel goes to the guard room, Bailey is panicking about how the electric chair may short from disuse. Jowd notes that whatever Bailey is worried about always comes true.
